About your Batik

Batik

Batik is a wax resist method of dyeing fabric. We design and manufacture two different style of batik for our clothing:

Painted Batik

Tulis: an original design is sketched directly onto the fabric. A tjanting tool (a small metal cup with a thin spout attached to a wooden handle) is dipped into hot wax and the design is outlined. The designs are hand painted with European dyes and the fabric is then placed in a dye bath to add background color. Finally the fabric is treated chemically to assure color fastness, boiled to remove the wax and then washed.

Chop Batik

The Chops are small pieces of copper that are soldered onto a frame in each of our designs. This heavy eight inch square is dipped in hot wax and repeated on the fabric. The waxed sections of the fabric resist the dye and retain the color underneath the wax. The fabric is then placed in a dye bath to achieve the background color. As with tulis batik the fabric is treated, boiled to remove the wax and washed.

"Imperfections"

Because of the traditional hand methods we use to achieve the richness of color and unique designs of our batik fabric there will be variations in colors and small "imperfections".

Care

We recommend machine washing, gentle cycle in detergents without bleach. Do not use soaking solutions such as Woolite. Machine or line dry.
